Welcome to String Theory

This is Dead Ringer speaking.

We're all connected, somehow. You all should realize that.

This chalkboard: it's only a blank slate, like all of your minds. I will now instil the fear in all of you that you tried to do with me... The hazing has gone on far enough. We almost tried to kill each other. It's how hazing works. But now, all of you will fall one by one.

One by one.

Have you figured me out yet?

I'm your God. I'm your Devil. I'm your life, your death...I'm one of you. But you don't know who I am. You'll never know. Have you figured me out yet?

Are you scared yet?

The first murders will occur soon. You have been warned.

"There are some bleachers overlooking the arena, if you want to sit there and wait," Alice said, shrugging and walking Pap over to them. The idea of Cayton watching her made her suddenly nervous. Judges? No. Big crowds? No. Some random girl who knew nothing about horses? Nervous as hell. What was with her today?

"Do you need help getting down?" she asked, letting Pap sidle up to the highest set of bleachers so Cayton could just slide off. Letting go of the reins, Alice easily slid from horse to bleachers, ready to help if needed. At this point, it wasn't even about Cayton's leg, it was about helping someone who had never ridden before. Pap mouthed the bleachers in boredom as he waited, and Alice suddenly got even more nervous.

Everything had been OK at the school. They had been on neutral ground, with lots of people around them. Now they were alone - most of the other students were at a schooling show, and the barn hands were gone for the day - and the impact of what she was doing hit her. What was she thinking? She had just met Cayton! This seemed crazy, and she couldn't justify her reasoning at all.

Cayton nodded, turning her head back over to Alice. She seemed a bit nervous all of a sudden, and Cayton frowned a bit. "Yeah, that's fine...you all right? You look almost as freaked out as I am," she said, blinking quietly. She still felt a little pale, and her whole body was shaking like a leaf in a storm. The ride was traumatizing enough as it was, but with Alice's arms wrapped around her waist for the entire thing...that was even worse...or better. Whatever.

Kay stared at the bleachers quietly, almost as if they were foreign. They seemed so low to the ground now that she was on a horse...She blinked and snapped out of it, turning her attention back to Alice. "Erm--I think I've got it.." she muttered, yanking her feet out of the stirrups and trying to swing her leg over. She gave a huff of frustration and finally yanked the leg off again, quickly sliding down and leaning on Pap's huge bulk for some support. She was able to hop down successfully and she popped her prosthetic back on, giving Alice a triumphant, but weak, grin.

"I didn't die. That's a start," she said, her body slightly wobbly from the movement. "That wasn't--as bad. Not as bad as I thought." Still bad, but Alice made it a bit better. Cayton frowned, seeing flickers of all different sorts of emotions behind her eyes. "You sure you're okay?"

"You did very well for your first time," Alice said with a grin, her mask falling back into place seamlessly. She'd become too good at this: hiding her emotions on command. It was a defense mechanism she'd learned a long time ago, and she still clung to it in times like this.

"I'm fine, I promise," she said, holding her hand up to assure Cayton. She wasn't really fine, but she didn't want Cayton to know that. No, Cayton needed to see the smooth, suave Alice right now, and that was what she would get. Now wasn't the time for nervous freak outs.

"I'll be about half an hour. If you get hot, the viewing booth is air conditioned," she said, motioning to small building with a glass front that faced the arena. Alice easily slid back aboard Pap, adjusting her stirrups to a shorter length for jumping and heading for the arena. As she trotted around the outside to warm up, Cayton slid from her ,ind and she began to fall into her routine. It was comforting to be able to shut everything out, even if only for a little while.

Cayton scoffed and rolled her eyes at Alice's comment. "Hah. If that was what you call 'good,' I'd like to see your definition of 'bad...'" she muttered, giving her a wry grin. She finally felt all of the blood rush back to her face, going back to normal. Her arms crossed in front of her, an eyebrow raised in defiance. She could still feel some quiet tremors running through her body, but it was nothing like what she had been feeling moments earlier. The worst was over.

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously at Alice's sudden change in demeanor. She could've sworn she had seen a glimpse of nervousness lining her eyes, and Cayton couldn't help but think that she was starting to lie to her. She gave a quiet huff and nodded, deciding to let the subject go. Though she wanted to make sure she was all right, she still couldn't help but respect her wishes. She herself hated it when people nagged her about her emotions. Alice would talk when ready.

"Okay, sounds good." She nodded and gave her a grin, tilting her head to the side. "I'll keep it in mind, but I think I'll be all right," she said, sitting down on the bleachers and crossing her legs. She blinked and took out her book, opening up to the dog eared page she had been on last.

She occasionally lifted her head up, watching as Alice rode. She winced whenever she made a tight turn or if she went faster. It was a thrill to watch, but Kay still feared for the girl's life...She always turned back to the safety of her book whenever she got faster; it helped her to relax a bit.

Alice opted out of adjusting the jumps, despite the fact that they were on the large side for Pap's training. He was ready for them, but was she? At this point, she didn't really have a choice. She started him over a small oxer before moving to bigger verticals and putting together combinations. Her mind was locked onto the task before her, keeping him from running out on her or losing his balance. Time seemed to stand still, and after one combination her nailed, she looked at her watch and gasped. She'd taken way too much time. Trotting out of the arena and over to the bleachers, she immediately shot Cayton an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't watching the time," she said apologetically. She truly did feel badly, especially now that she had to untack and wash Pap before putting him away.

"Way to start off on a good foot, eh?" she said with a chuckle, finally allowing a little of her nervousness to show through. She didn't want to seem completely inhuman, and sometimes she felt like hiding all of her emotions made her come across that way. Being defensive was one thing, but being offensive without giving someone a chance was another. Sighing, she tried to force herself to relax.

Cayton wasn't really paying much attention to the time, either. She was too busy growing more and more absorbed into Kindred. It was an extremely odd mix of both African American literature and science fiction, and the book had won Kay over immediately. She loved both genres, and the action had started quickly. She was a pretty fast reader, so she was just about done when it was time for Alice to get off. But as soon as she looked up to see if she was getting off, she was just beginning to start the jumps.

Kay's eyes widened as she swallowed. The fear drained from her body, as well as her color. The absolute grace that she was able to handle her horse with was breathtaking--it almost made her want to try it herself. But, remembering what had happened last time and the fear that had coursed through her veins made the thought disappear quickly. However, she still couldn't take her eyes off of Alice. It was almost as if she was one with the horse--she looked totally natural up there, and...beautiful.

She snapped out of it when she realized Alice was nearing her. She grinned and shook her head, her face going red. "It's fine, it was nice to watch," she said, trying to show her that she was speaking the truth.

She grinned, finally relaxing. So, she was a bit nervous. Probably not as nervous as she was, but still nervous. That's good. That's okay, she could deal with that. "Yeah, but I'll give you another shot," she joked, shooting her a wink before slipping down from the bleachers.

"Yeah, he did really well today," Alice said happily, smoothing her hand down Pap's neck and giving it a loving pat. She couldn't take any credit for his work; he didn't give her any trouble at all, and barely questioned her judgment. He snorted and shook his head, and Alice smiled down at Cayton from her perch.

"You can help me give him a bath if you want. You don't even have to touch him," she joked, dropping the reins and kicking her feet from the stirrups. She nudged Pap toward the barn, and he walked lazily next to Cayton. He knew the way, and Alice felt no need to guide him. She was happy to just relax after a ride like that, and let Pap walk as he wanted.

"You know, you could always learn to ride if you overcame your fear," Alice said softly, shrugging and looking down at the top of Cayton's head. It was weird to not be able to see the girl's face and judge what she was feeling. Alice wanted to give Cayton the freedom of riding; a freedom from her missing limb and the way it held her back.

Cayton gave her a grin, cocking her head and admiring her a bit. "The both of you did. It was like you could read his mind or something," she said, blinking quietly. The horse snorted, making her edge away a little bit. That fear was still there, and probably always would be, no matter what would be happening. Even Alice wouldn't be able to totally annihalate that fact...but she could let it lessen a bit. It already had...

She blinked a bit. "Y--you sure? I mean, if you need the help but, I don't know if I'd be much of use..." she said, suddenly starting to edge away from the big black Pap. She swallowed and gave a slightly nervous smile at Alice, not really sure what to tell her. She wanted to do anything to get closer to her, but--bathe the animal that thirsted for her blood?

"Okay." What the fuck? Was she insane?

She blinked in surprise at Alice. "Not...really...I mean, I really wouldn't be able to do much with my pegleg here," she stated, knocking on her prosthetic with her fist for emphasis. It made a loud clacking noise, which even creeped Kay out a little bit.

"I couldn't read his mind, but I think he can read mine," she said with a chuckle, fiddling with a bit of Pap's mane. When they got back to the cross ties, she slid off of him and picked his halter up.

"You just have to spray him with a hose, it's not too difficult. He loves it," Alice replied, smiling at Cayton and sliding Pap's bridle off. She put the halter on him and clipped the cheek latch before tying him up and hanging the bridle on a peg.

"You could ride. I've taught people with disabilities far worse than yours to ride," she said, cocking an eyebrow and unbuckling the saddle. She put it away in the tack room and took the boots off of his legs before grabbing the lead and clipping it on to his halter. She began walking towards the wash rack and turned to look at Cayton.

"So, can you specialize within the FBI?" she asked, curious to know more about this woman and her job.

Kay grinned and nodded. "It was pretty amazing to see you two work so well together. I've never seen such a strong bond." She stared at Alice quietly as she pet the horse's mane. She couldn't help but smile softly. Those two were pretty close--she had never heard of such a thing to be close to an animal--especially one that had about 1000 pounds on her. Amazing.

She nodded and watched the cross ties become hooked onto his halter in slight fascination. A horse that big could easily break away from those metal hooks--she couldn't help but wonder why he didn't do it. Maybe he was too happy with Alice to break away, and as he stood there with a sleepy look on his face, Cayton gave a quiet grin. She suddenly had the urge to hug either the horse or the girl, but she acted on neither thought and simply stood, waiting for the hose to spray the horse with.

"Yeah, I guess," she muttered, letting her eyes travel to the dirty floor. "I don't know if I could even without my bad leg..." she said, much more quietly this time. She'd never be able to get that close to an animal she was so petrified of.

She brightened a bit, her head snapping upward. "Hell yeah, I'm going undercover," she said, giving a grin. "It's almost like acting, and it's helluva lot better than sitting around at a desk all day. Which is probably what I would have been doing if I couldn't prove myself to the bosses," she said. She was being privately trained along with her classes, so she already knew the system well.

"Isn't being undercover dangerous?" Alice asked, clipping Pap into the wash rack and turning to look more seriously at Cayton. She couldn't explain why she was suddenly worried, but she was. She could understand putting yourself in harms way for something that you loved - what she did didn't exactly come complete with a seatbelt and a mattress to fall on. But still, undercover...that was a whole different ball game.

Automatically, Alice grabbed a hose and turned it on, spraying Pap's legs and letting him dance away from the spray before slowly moving it over his entire body. The sweat and grime disappeared under the water, and she found the task soothing. Why was she so worried about someone she had just met?

Moving to Pap's face, she let him drink a little from the hose before dousing his head, watching him shake himself off like a big dog. It made her smile to see him like that. Shutting off the hose, she grabbed a sweat scraper and started going to work on him, watching Cayton under his neck.

Cayton's eyebrow rose quietly, blinking at Alice's tone. "Yes, mother, but I can handle myself out there just as well as anybody else," she mentioned, a grin forming on her face. She had no idea why Alice was suddenly concerned about her, but it was amusing, to say the least. She took a step back when Alice brought out the hose and made a slight face when she watched all of the sweat and dirt wash off the horse. It was like a walking germ farm...But Kay had been in much dirtier situations, so she didn't complain at all.

"Actually, it's pretty safe anyway. We're trained for stuff like that. Besides...I'll always have my emergency kit with me, so that prevents basically any disaster from occuring. And my aim is damn good," she said, a smug smirk plastered to her face now. She let her hands delve into her pockets as she tilted her head. Her green eyes quietly studied Alice as she cleaned the horse.

She quickly backed away again when the horse shook himself off. She made a slightly disgusted face and wiped off the grime that had now been splattered all over her face and torso. She laughed quietly to herself, but even she had no idea why she was laughing in the first place. High on nerves, maybe? But there really wasn't much to be nervous about, right?

"What exactly is in an emergency kit? If you were captured, how would you get to it?" Alice asked, scraping Pap dry. She started at his neck and worked back, making sure she had gotten as much water as she could before she unclipped him to take him back to his stall.

"Well, someone should worry about you if you won't," she joked, smirking at Cayton and letting Pap loose in his stall. She hung his halter up and took his light sheet off of the rack by his stall. Entering the small space, she flicked it over his back and deftly clipped the buckles up before exiting and sliding the door shut.

"My apartment is this way," she told Cayton, motioning towards the end of the barn and striding down the hallway. She opened the door to the tack room and took the stairs at the back, which led up to her small home. Opening the door, she motioned for Cayton to go ahead of her before entering and shutting the door behind them. It was a nice place; open and airy and very clean. She worked hard to keep it clean despite the fact that it was in a barn.
